Not Quite Vegas

The casinos dotted here and there in our area are just not quite as glitzy as the ones you see in Las Vegas. This is one I saw in Iowa while on a dog run back to Minnesota from Iowa.

A dog run is when we pick up retired racing Greyhounds from someplace and bring them back to the rescue group (GPA-MN in this case) to be readied for adoption.

  2. We call dog runs 'GURs' on the forum I use. It has a nice ring to it, don't you think? I love the way greyhound people will pull together to bring a hound home, sometimes across many states, and involving several stages and perhaps overnight stops along the way, with several volunteers taking part!

The casino is rather quaint, when compared to Vegas, isn't it? Funny!

  3. Yes Grey Talk. Sometimes called GUR (Greyhound Underground Railroad that after something in our history I believe). That is when the hound is passed from person to person along a line in way of making it to a certain destination. Done those many times. There are also dog hauls when you go to the track or farm and get the dogs no longer wanted to bring them back to start the 'petting' process. Done many many of those as well as set up more than I can count. In the end they both achieve the same thing, but are a little different. Or used to be 'back in the day'. I am on Grey Talk too but never get involved much in the 'talking' part. Occasionally I get booted out for inactivity and have to 're-join'.

Thanks for coming by, Jay. Love the opportunity to talk 'Greyhound' any chance I get! Love your comments and welcome them always! Hugs.

  6. Who would think, a casino in the middle of who-knows-where.

  7. Fascinating! Almost industrial in a small way. And small is how it looks :)
    Well spotted.

  9. That is a great picture! I think it would be cool to see it "in living color" sometime, too, but it definitely lends itself well to sepia!

I miss doing GURs! We used to run between here and Saint Louis or Chicago, or occasionally Indianapolis, but the group we worked with doesn't move dogs much now.

  10. Ah - isn't it lovely the way 'houndies' club together to save one of those beauties - I hope it never ever stops!!!

  15. That strikes me as funny seeing the casino sign in that context. Kind of a juxtaposition.

  16. Very cute in its small way...compared to the gigantic casinos of Las Vegas and California. So perfect in black and white, too!
