Happy Birthday Lady Liberty (Revised)

“On June 15, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived at Bedloe's Island inside 214 wooden packing crates. The beginning of her life on US soil.”

“Unveiling day, October 28, 1886, was declared a public holiday. The rainy, foggy day could not dampen the spirits of the more than 1 million people who lined New York's streets, draped with red, white and blue and French tricolor bunting, to watch a parade of more than 20,000 pass by. Wall Street was the only area of the city working on the day of Liberty's unveiling. The New York Times reported that as the parade passed by, the office boys "from a hundred windows began to unreel the spools of tape that record the fateful messages of the 'ticker.' In a moment the air was white with curling streamers." And so the famous New York ticker-tape parade was born.”

  2. I had just learned that she was originally made for some other channel- but the US ended up with her instead. I tried to go up to her crown when I visited her, but it was really hot and the elevators were full. I got to her knee and pooped out.

  6. Hi all,
Great comments, love them and so happy you all took the time to stop by and chat.

    Reader Wil,
October 1886 was the date of her offical 'reveal' on US soil. She arrived in many crates on Jume 15th, 1885. I have revised my post to further explain. Though she hit land here in June 1885 she was not fully erected and dedicated until October 1886. This date was then declared the 'offical' holiday to celebrate Lady Liberty's birthday.

When you look her up you will see many references to the October date, but not as many references to the June date unless you dig a bit further into her history.

Thanks to all again, she is a beauty regardless of the facts, isn't she!
