Don't Be Fooled by These 12 Common Pet Myths

For many, many years now I have helped (or tried to help) others work through behavioral problems with their animals; specifically retired racing greyhounds that have been newly placed into homes after retiring from the track. However, along with the greyhound placement, often times other pets are involved as well as children.

My Dad knows this and being an animal lover too he took the time to send me the following article. I endorse this article whole-heartedly and would like to throw into the mix that in the majority of cases where animals do not work out in a home it is not the animal’s fault; it is the human’s lack of understanding the animal or misconceptions about what is really going on. I have told countless people to read the materials I give and recommend to them in order to better communicate with their pets and learn to think ‘on their pet’s level’ as pets do *not* have the ability to think on the human’s level.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERARenner: Hey, I’m trying to tell you something but you just aren’t *getting* it!

Below are some very common misconceptions being discussed by Amy Shojai that you may find interesting. Take them to heart; it could make all the difference when it comes to working with your well loved animals. Hopefully it will spur further interest and you will research a bit more to help you form a better and more nurturing relationship with your pets. I hope some part of what Amy Shojai has written catches your eye and helps you to consider communicating from your *pet’s point of view* instead of assuming they can figure out *yours*. Hopefully it will make things a lot easier for you and your pet:

For centuries, people created fanciful stories to explain puzzling animal antics. Many of these myth-understandings about cat and dog behaviors linger on, even though modern veterinary and behavior experts have uncovered scientific explanations for these issues. Here we lay 12 common myths to rest.

Myth 1: Dogs and cats enjoy being hugged. People are by nature touchy-feely creatures. Dogs and cats on the other hand, grab and hold prey, and "hug" during mating or fighting. Pets may enjoy nuzzling and getting affection akin to hugging, or there may be a reason why they should be sensitized to being hugged, but it is good to remember that your pet may also confuse a hug with aggression.

Myth 2: Cats seek out people who hate cats. It can seem that way. A cat lover's admiring stares and "kitty, kitty, kitty" calls can be off-putting. So in a crowded room, a cat often seeks the only person ignoring her. Besides, cat lovers may already smell like strange cats, so she'll be more attracted to the cat-free-zone human.

Myth 3: Dogs that are aggressive are showing dominance. Actually, it is fearful dogs that most often aggress to make a scary situation go away. A top dog rarely aggresses because other dogs accept he's the boss. You do however see pushy dogs learn to use snarls to get their way, or clueless adolescent dogs act up because they've gotten too big for their furry britches and want to challenge the real boss.

Myth 4: Dogs and cats are jealous of the phone. The phone rings and suddenly your pet demands attention. This can certainly be annoying but their behavior is logical when you realize why they're doing it. From you pet's perspective, you're talking and there's nobody else around -- so you must be talking to your pet!

Myth 5: Dogs wag their tails when they are happy. Not always. Dogs wag when excited, when fearful, when happy or even to signal imminent attack. The position of the tail, and frequency of wags, is a better indicator of happiness. Low-held tails with slow, loose wags usually signal, "Come closer; I want to be friends."

Myth 6: Dogs and cats learn only if you punish them.
No. Punishment actually can interfere with pets' ability to learn. Punishment can make behaviors worse and can cause fear aggression. Instead, you need to teach an alternative to bad behavior.

Myth 7: Dogs catch on to house training more quickly when you rub their noses in their accidents. Absolutely not. But this does teach the dog that humans sometimes go nuts and seemingly want them to eat their poop! Talk about confusing. Punishing for a normal behavior like going to the bathroom encourages dogs to hide it better the next time. Instead, catch your dog in the act of targeting the right spot and reward with praise or treats for the most effective lesson.

Myth 8: Cats always land on their feet. It is true that cats have balance organs in the inner ear that allow a cat to contract and flex the spine, shoulders and flanks to land on her feet in amazing ways. But there are many factors involved. Falls from too short a distance -- being dropped by a child, for example -- won't allow enough time for a paw landing. Conversely, landing feet first from a fall from a great height can break bones and seriously injure the cat.

Myth 9: Cats purr when they are happy. Often they do. But think of the cat's purr as a feline smile -- do you smile only when happy? Purring soothes kitty emotions (and humans as well), and the vibration relieves pain and speeds healing, so purring can happen when a cat is happy, injured or just needs to comfort himself.

Myth 10: Cats wet the bed and dogs destroy furniture and other items in the house because they are angry. There are many possible physical, emotional and/or instinctual reasons for these normal behaviors -- none having to do with anger or vengefulness. Items that smell like you (bed, shoes, purse) are targeted because your scent comforts the pet. Consider that a back-handed compliment, not spite.

Myth 11: Cats suck the breath from babies. Yes, this old wives tale is still around. Curious cats may check out milky-smelling infant breath or be attracted to a warm crib. They are not trying to harm the baby, but pets should always be supervised around infants.

Myth 12: Dogs alpha roll each other. A study of captive wolves (later debunked) gave rise to this theory. Dogs roll onto their backs to expose their tummies to other animals -- or people -- and signal deference and non-threat. Dogs willingly show their tummies to people or other dogs they want to placate or acquiesce. But even alpha dogs show their tummies to invite puppies and subordinate dogs to play. Dogs do not force other dogs onto their backs to prove leadership. Alpha rolling your dog may confuse or frighten him and some dogs even fight back. Don't risk it!

Enter Cato (name chosen! And Fidget Is His Name-o)

Cato 020

Pronounced Kay-toe. His name is Fidget….because that is what he does a lot of!

We went looking for an older female kitty to come share our home with us and ended up with a 4 month old male. Upon the passing of our sweet 20 year old kitties Vinni and Monty – both males, we had to wait a little while to be able to wrap our minds around getting a new kitty. We were thinking just one in residence would be fine as we have always had multiple cats and many greyhounds at our house. We have had females and males in the feline department and decided that for a single cat living here perhaps a female would be the best choice. We wanted an older kitty because we know there are so many older cats out there needing homes, and kittens (we thought) just had a better shot at getting homes than old cats. All the things in mind of what we thought wanted, a few days ago I was looking around on Pet Finder when I spotted a female cat named ‘Pogo’ that so reminded me of the Kilban cats. All she needed were red sneakers on her feet and she’d be the spitting image of his drawings. Pogo was in a shelter that was over 1.5 hours away from our house, quite the drive considering all of the shelters and rescue groups in our area. Still both my husband and I fell in love with Pogo and had a good feeling about her. Saturday mid-morning Mr. Spacial said, ‘let’s go get Pogo’. I hemmed and hawed a bit…was I ready to *do*this yet? Did I really want to drive that far? I had emailed the shelter and also called trying to contact them to see if I could get more information about Pogo and check if she was even still there. (No answer) They are a volunteer group and had very limited adoption hours, if we didn’t just leave and go to where she was, we would miss our chance. So we took off on our quest for Pogo.

We got there in good time, went inside and met with a nice lady who led us to Pogo. Wow – Pogo was a *BIG* girl…but no worries there…maybe a little Light Cat Food would help a little with that and some exercise. We were very excited to go into a little room where the woman left us play with Pogo. Let me say at this point that we are really animal savvy people with both cats and dogs…so Pogo only actually got her teeth into me once…I was faster the rest of the time.

Yep, Pogo did NOT want to be toyed with…that was a girl with an attitude, big time. I won’t go into all of the sorted details…the woman came back in and actually scruffed her and smacked her little nose. Pogo only looked at me with an even more disgusted look – ears completely flattened. I felt awful and was trying to decide if we could get her passed this or not. Finally we just decided due to the fact they didn’t know how she was with dogs (her information said she was good with kids – but I wasn’t buying it at this point), and that we have a 2.5 year old grandson that has 3 kitties and loves them we had to pass on Pogo. I was disheartened as usually my instincts about animals are correct…,that and the fact that we take on and work with any special needs animals all the time. I also couldn’t just let the fact go that she wanted to rip my lips off.

Mr. Spacial said ‘Well are there others like her…but a little more manageable?’ (or something along that line). Of course there were and we ended up seeing a lot of cats here and there, running throughout the place (they were out running free in shifts). We went into this one room to meet a couple of guys (how we ended up looking at males again – the mind boggles), though I do like to say ‘come on boys’ at my house…. ;) Any way, we ended up in a room that had a couple of young males playing and kittens galore. The woman was introducing us to everyone and explaining where every one came from and down in the bottom right crate sat a little squirrely looking guy with sprigs of hair sprouting off him here and there…and even from his ears.

Cato 017

We inquired…his name was Cato. Quiet, bright eyed and the moment you picked him up you could hear him motor purring. ‘Scurrying be damned, scritch me!’ And scritching is what Mr. S did, until he was handed off to me, then I scritched him some more. Cato 036

The rest is history. Forms all filled out, fees paid the little 4 month old guy road like a champ in his kennel all the way home. He played with his little catnip pillow and chatted with us a little while we drove but couldn’t have been a sweeter little guy the whole way. He spent his night in a large (LARGE) kennel that is used for greyhounds, up in our bedroom sleeping with us (litter box, bed and water enclosed), didn’t hardly make a peep. He is very laid back, but at the same time very curious and loving.

Cato 024

The hounds here are like, whatever, they haven’t paid him a bit of mind, though we are being very cautious of the cat-dog interaction. Been through that a few times successfully. The kitty is a bit leery of the hounds, which is good.Cato 030 Certainly it will take some time for all the adjustments to be made and everyone to be trusted with each other but I think we have a winner! The shelter named this little guy ‘Cato’ but we are not certain yet this will remain his name. We have to make sure it fits him, so a name change *may* occur…or perhaps not. BTW – I was just informed by Mr S that Cato Fidget now owns the lower portion of the house…or so Cato Fidget was telling him. (Update since first posted – we decided on Fidget).

Cato 011

It is a bit curious is the way he took up the very spot where my Monty used to lay on the couch….by or on my head.

He’s such a sweetie, I am not sure how we ended up with him, but he seems to fit in here just fine.

True Color Thursday Celebrates Cerise!

The color for this True Color Thursday is one I had never heard of before, so first I had to define the color: Cerise.

ce-rise - n. A deep to vivid purplish red.

[French, from Old French, cherry; see cherry.]

Adj.
1.
cerise - of a color at the end of the color spectrum (next to orange); resembling the color of blood or cherries or tomatoes or rubies

Noun
1.
cerise - a red the color of ripe cherries

There are many Shades Of Pink, just click on the link and you will see an array.

And upon definition of the color all my notions about today’s blog went down the drain. It is a purplish cherry red, and at least for me, much harder to find.

Here is a pair of Cerise earrings:

I knew this shirt would come in handy one day. There is some Cerise in there somewhere…just have a look! Cerise

Vinni’s Going In!

A quick one here today. I have been battling with Vinni's issues every since Monty passed away. The drooling has returned along with an odor and the loss of hair on one of his back feet. He has been eating baby food along with some special cat milk packed with proper nutrition for an aging cat that won't eat, expensive stuff, but certainly worth it if it gets him going correctly again. Since we have had a step backwards over the last 24 hours I felt he needed to be seen again by his vet....so in we go this morning. Wish us luck!

Hick-Up

Just noticed strange movement across the room from me, looked up and Scooter seems to have quite the case of hick-ups, laying on his bed there. Seems pretty non-plused about it.

scootercropped

Speaking of Scooter, our vet visit on Saturday ended up showing that he is extremely hypothyroid. So we have started him on soloxine. Hoping now that perhaps it was the reason for his strange type of seizures. Disorientation is probably a better way to describe them.

Monty also did not do well.

Montyreduced

I am working on a diet for him that will help him. Still have to get a urine sample in for Monty...I have to say, urine samples are much easier to get from a greyhound than a little kitty cat. But one way or another, I'll get that little jar under there, that is btw the easy part, catching him in the act is a little tougher and requires vigilance...following until finally going to the litter box...type of thing. It is always good to have a ‘mission’ for the day, no matter if it does require following around a cat with an empty baby food jar.

I’m on it like litter on paws!

Lite Snow

PICT0074freshsnowcrop Yep...the skinny stuff, no calories....just a little fluff. It has been good to make things look clean, no yellow snow at the moment because it is currently snowing, but the hounds always make it their business to have their business be everyone's business...so it goes that by the time they are out a couple times it is pretty clear where the dogs live. Look for the yellow snow and you will find a dog (or in our case the dogs!) Dogs are pretty 'out there' where bodily functions go, whereas cats are.....shhhhhh, 'scuse me' shhhhh....going in to a little covered box where I will have my privacy, and then....shhhhh (quietly now)....cover it up so no one sees it...I will tip toe back to where I was and get in the exact same position I was in before I did my ....shhhh.... business. No one will even know I did my business, because I am a cat. No body's business is my business and my business is no one else's business.

Really quite the big difference between the two!

Dogs are all 'yeah, yeah....right here...I got your business right here! And I advertise!'

Unless of course your cat has gas...then it is a little more everyone's business but still not as bad as several Greyhounds with gas, and for those moments we stock Federally approved gas masks or, if it is your choice, we can just let it render you unconscious and drag you out into the fresh air to recover. (Not recommended when the temps are -zero outside).

Keeping Vinni – Vinni

PICT0023 Vinni Snoozing

Since Monty passed away a little over a week ago Vinni, my other 20 year old cat, has been trying to starve himself to death. Monty and Vinni were very close, being the same age, and both Vinni and I miss Monty greatly.

The things you do to keep a loved pet going are pretty much like grabbing at straws. Dietary restrictions go out the window as he now pretty much is having anything he will eat. So long expensive organic kitty foods. I am trying to keep it healthy as I can, but face it, food can be the healthiest and still do no good if not ingested.

He seems to like egg yokes, whipped cream and vanilla yogurt right now. My oldest daughter said it sounded pretty good to her if I would only throw in some strawberries she’d join him for dinner. Of course Vinni is not into strawberries, so my daughter is out of luck there. I realize these three things are not good for cats in large amounts and I do worry about that, but at this point just getting him to consume some calories are something even my vet stresses.

You now walk into my foyer to find a smorgasbord of items in little glass dishes for him to select from. All laid out side by side next to the water dish. If I seem him moving about some I lay them down, take some and put it in his mouth….see if I can tempt him. When the smorgasbord doesn’t tempt him I bring his food to him where ever he maybe. Sometimes that works, other times it does not. I have to watch him eat because he is no longer cleaning himself so I wipe his face for him, (okay he is not thrilled with that part). I give him baths with a dry cleaning shampoo so as not to threaten him with water.

Just hoping he can be turned around, of course he has to want it for himself.

A Little Dipper

PICT0055montycouchcropped

Monty, doer of all strangeness within our walls, Bestower of many things for me to conversate about, would like me to convey his annoyance with me for laughing at him when he drinks water from a bowl. A lover of water, he really enjoys getting a drink in many different ways. Actually a lot of his ways could fit into the ‘Slob’ category but sometimes they are actually very dainty looking. However, I’m pretty sure he would take offense as being labeled as dainty as well, so I will skip the labels and cut to the chase. He just can’t drink like a normal cat, (if there is such a thing). He often sits beside the water bowl dipping his paw in to scoop up a little water and then licks it off his paw ‘…ahhh pure heaven’. He will sit and do this for half an hour at a time. There are times when he has to go to the dish and slap the surface of the water many times, occasionally with both paws… ‘submit oh fluid of life, submit I say….!’ Once he has beaten it into submission he can then masterfully lap it up. Though the most annoying (and often occurs when he is most annoyed at me) is the ‘Move The Entire Bowl’ method. ‘Move The Entire Bowl’ really didn’t take him that long to master. He simply plops himself down by the bowl and proceeds to push the bowl around in quick small jerks so the water spills over the sides in waves. When he feels a large enough puddle has been created, he drinks. He has emptied large bowls this way, because obviously the ‘best’ water is at the bottom.

Once when my OH was working close by, a good 3 times in about a 30 minute span, the bowl was emptied by Monty and again filled by either my OH or myself (the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing). When I saw it, I just thought, ‘oh Monty’s done now’ wiped up the water and031403_monty 2 refilled the bowl. Many wet towels later my OH caught on and put the bowl up on the counter putting an end to it. A necessary step to break the cycle. It was for Monty’s own good. He was suffering from a very severe bowl moving funk, it just wouldn’t release him. Either that or he was getting back at me for getting him a food shaped so he couldn’t bite the ends off of to leave all over the house.

Greyhounds Share

This afternoon Vinni decided, like he often does, to take over a dog bed in the sun. Generally this leads to pacing and whining at me to let me know that one of the kitties have taken their bed. Occasionally though, the hounds just find a way to sleep around the cat. Due to the limited sunshine streaking though the windows, today was one of those ‘sharing days’

Blue shares with Vinni

They took turns sharing. Here is Blew with Vinni.

Scooter shares with Vinni

Here Scooter shares with Vinni.

Renner shares with Vinni

Renner is now sharing with Vinni.

And if you look closely you will notice that during all these hound transitions, Vinni doesn’t give an inch….doesn’t move from his spot. He is large and in charge!

Scooter and Vinni sleep

Greyhounds and Cats get along pretty well most of the time as long as the hounds don’t mind sharing. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzz…….
